How to Make Natural Deodorant

Everyone loves to smell nice, right? That’s why giving up my beloved Dove deodorant was a battle. I would try various natural deodorant brands here and there, but nothing compared to the wonder that is Dove. 

Until now.

I’ve found a recipe that I absolutely love, and the best part is that you probably already have everything you need to make it.

What you’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of arrowroot flour
  • 6 Tsp of coconut oil
  • 10-15 drops of 100% pure essential oils (if you want a stronger fragrance, add more drops – I prefer a subtle hint of fragrance)

My favorite scent right now is lavender (5 drops) and vanilla (7 drops). One of my favorite things about the natural deodorant as opposed to Dove or other deodorant brands is that overall, my body odor has decreased significantly. And to let you in on a little secret, sometimes I don’t have to wear any deodorant at all (ew, I know, but I haven’t had any complaints…yet).

Benefits of Using Natural Deodorant
Something that I have learned is that sweating is a completely healthy bodily function. Sweating rids your body of toxins, so you want to sweat. This natural deodorant not only allows your body to get rid of toxins, it’s much more nourishing for your skin than commercial deodorants that are filled with skin drying, hormone disrupting chemicals. Antiperspirants that you will find in the store prohibit your body from getting rid of toxins at all,  AND the key ingredient, aluminum, has been linked to Alzheimers disease, so it’s basically the devil.

As I mentioned before, sometimes I don’t even have to wear deodorant at all. How can this be? I’m not a scientist, but my theory is that I’m not producing a strong odor because I’m constantly allowing my body to get rid of toxins by using natural, toxin pulling ingredients in my home-made deodorant.

So what are you waiting for? Hop on into your kitchen and stir yourself up some deodorant!

Tips & Hints:

  • The consistency may vary, as coconut oil tends to melt around 74° F . Store your deodorant in a cool, dark place.
  • Scoop about a dime size into your hands, rub together and massage onto your skin. This was weird for me to get used to, but well worth it.
  • If you find your skin feels too dry after using this recipe, try using less baking soda.
